Mireille’s desperate attempts to wrestle control from her kidnappers by sacrificing her body are deeply felt, but it’s the author’s unflinching portrayal of Mireille’s shattered physical and psychological state once she’s rejoined her husband and infant son that is at once disturbing and frighteningly resonant. Though the opening kidnapping feels like a scene from a particularly stilted thriller, Gay soon finds a more assured footing as she narrows in on the pain each character both endures and inflicts. When Mireille regains her freedom, it’s only the first step in the shaken family’s uncertain recovery. Mireille is taken by a gang of armed men in front of her husband and baby son. ![]() Her captors regularly extract hefty ransoms from their wealthy victims, but in this case, Mireille’s too-proud father refuses to pay up until it’s nearly too late, resulting in his daughter suffering 13 days of increasingly savage sexual torture. A Untamed State is about Mireille Duval Jameson, a Haitian-American woman who’s kidnapped just outside her parents’ house in Port au Prince when she’s visiting from Miami. Mireille Duval Jameson, a Haitian-born young woman, is on vacation from Miami and visiting her upper-class parents in Port-au-Prince when she is kidnapped at gunpoint. Poet and short story writer Gay’s first novel delivers a searing portrait of a politically and economically divided Haiti, as seen through the lens of one family’s nightmare. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Even the opening to the limo attack is really fun, with the build-up to the attack even though the inevitable is about to occur, and the sheer fun of the battle with the vampires in front of the casino is one of the best scenes due to the sheer outrageousness of it all to mix it up with a couple of really nice chases inner-cut alongside a pretty decent fight. Among the best at this is the opening in the night-club, from the stumbling-across-the-ceremony section that features some really freaky images to the alleyway confrontation and the finale with the flying vampire being really great, and the all-out fun of the motel-confrontation in the middle of the desert all provide a lot more disturbing images than expected and really put some fine action scenes in here as well. ![]() One of the better points is that this one decides to really throw the seriousness out the window and just have fun with the topic, and there's so many random scenes in here that are included just for that reason. Working on the Las Vegas beat, police officers assigned to a missing person's investigation run into several others all inadvertently crossing paths with a group of vampires using the strip as a hideout and decide to band together to defeat the common enemy. ![]() ![]() ![]() The plot rollicks through betrayals and heists, with a heavy dose of weird science, as if The Count of Monte Cristo were smashed up with Frankenstein and reworked into a Bond film. Their hot air balloon sets on fire, they end up having to blow a hole in the side of the prison, and their rescuee turns out to be a girl who can control electricity. To complement this effect, the film is cut as if it were a journalistic newsreel ( similar to the films of Costa-Gavras), complete with the voice of a ‘broadcaster’ who recaps the events of the war up until the film’s start. In order to maintain this attempt at neutrality, Pontecorvo mostly cast non-professional actors who had been active throughout the conflict.
